How I Work: Trauma & EMDR
Working With What Lies Beneath
Many people – including therapists – believe that if you talk about a problem in the right way, for the right amount of time, your problem can be resolved. And that’s true in many situations. But unhealed trauma lives below language, inside and under our emotional selves.
I work with the feelings inside and under your story. This is where I focus my healing efforts.
EMDR: Treating Both Kinds of Trauma
I use EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing – to treat symptoms of PTSD and CPTSD. These wounds are caused both by what did happen, and by what didn’t happen. What didn’t happen is liable to be traumatic because it’s about a child’s attachment experience.
“Big T” Trauma
Caused by what did happen — a distinct, identifiable event: abuse, an accident, a loss, a threat to life or safety.
“Little T” Trauma
Caused by what didn’t happen — an unmet attachment need in childhood. Quieter, easy to overlook, just as real.
